On Sheep

We’ve been in New Zealand for 2.5 weeks, so it’s only natural that we would learn about sheep.  They are literally everywhere here, and look just as cute in person as the pics you’ve seen.

  • There are about 40 million sheep in NZ, compared to the 4 million people that live here.  We were told by a lady who raises sheep that at one point, the total number of sheep roaming this country reached 80 million!
  • Sheep run if you try to pet them.  I wanted to.  I was offered $100 if I could actually touch one, but it is true what they say, sheep just run away from people
  • Sheep who fall over on their side can die.  We met an American who saw a sheep laying on her side, in a ditch.  We were all told that sheep can die in this position because they can’t turn themselves back up.  On farms, it is customary to bestow one of the kids with the task of walking around twice a day to make sure that no sheep is on their side.  The American felt bad, but neither he nor we turned back around to save the unlucky sheep
  • Each sheep has about 10-12 chops.  Lamb chops taste good!
  • Here you can get 4 lamb chops for $5 NZD–that’s $2.5 USD!
  • Each sheep gets sheared 12 times.  After that, they become meet on your table
  • I’ve been trying to touch a sheep since I’ve gotten here, but either you have to pay to go on a lame “farm tour” or you get a useless offer at 10 at night from a drunk Kiwi to go see his sheep
