Seno Made Me Do It!

oldrunner.jpgMy friend David, of MyWestStory fame has an arch-nemesis who is also a member of the NY Road Runner Club. Whether you think it’s fair or not, his arch-nemesis is hmm, about 54-years-old. So yeah, old, and you’re probably thinking to yourself David should pick on somebody his own age. But the 54-year old is quite the runner, and I guess David and the old runner have been alternating beating each other in the various races they’ve entered.

“I don’t want to beaten by the 54-year old. And I don’t want to be last,” he proclaimed.

You see, according to David, he has an advantage over the old runner in long-distance races that require endurance, while the old runner takes the lead in shorter races. There’s an upcoming 4k race, which, if you believe Seno’s theory, he will lose to the old guy.

Coincidentally, David suggested I join the NY Road Runner–even though none of the runs happen in the LES. Knowing full well about my addiction to the cheap, he explained I would get discounts on race entry fees and gear. And then, somehow, Seno also convinced me to sign up for my first NY race.

I am starting to suspect, however, that David wants to ensure that he is NOT the slowest runner in the running club, even if the old guy beats him…because I will be dead last.

On a related topic, I met my running partner from Craigslist for the first run last Wednesday. She seems nice and pretty normal

  1. Two things… first, the race is four miles, not a 4k. Since we ran six yesterday, I’m pretty sure you can handle it.

Second, and this should make you happy… being a part of the New York Road Runners Club means you now get discounts at races and local running shops and stuff… not that you’re ever one to look for a discount! Being a part of NYRRC does not, however, make you a part of a smaller running club (like my club, the New York Harriers) that will then post your times for everyone else in your club to see and ridicule.

As for beating the 54-year old… well, I’m now in the Masters category (turning 40 has its benefits) so, really, we’re in the same age group!
