A Trip to Chinatown and the Coldest Day Yet

Diesel and I woke up lazily and made our first meal in the new place. Breakfast was good and gave us a bit more courage to face the 30 degree weather that awaited us.

Our first stop was the East River Park. We wanted to check out our new running route. The park itself is pretty nice and getting there is not so bad save some traffic lights, but honestly, running in this kind of weather is quite intimidating. After walking around the park, we headed over the direction of the Brooklyn Bridge and soon found ourselves in the bustling streets of Chinatown. Mysterious herbs and gelatinous blocks of gu were being sold everywhere, along with live fish and frogs.

Greed took the best of me, and I was determined to find a place to get duck and eggplant. The problem (or not, depending on your point of view) with Chinatown is that every little hole in the wall has been written up on Zagat, the NY Times, or some other sort of major publication, so it’s hard to gauge how good the place really is. We settled for a place called the New Green Bo. So the other thing about Chinatown is that the restaurants have weird names that make no sense whatsoever grammatically, so don’t ask me what the name means. It also makes it hard for me to remember the name in case I want to go again. There were people waiting and I could clearly hear what appeared to be the head waitress yelling at everybody and throwing chopsticks and tea cups at the patrons. I figured if the white peeps would submit themselves to this kind of horrendous service (unlike us, who see this kind of “service” as the norm), it must be good. The food was indeed very good, even though the waitress had no qualms about correcting Tim after he ordered every dish. “What? Roasted duck? We don’t have roasted duck; it’s CRISPY DUCK.” “What? No, no green onion pancakes it’s SCALLION PANCAKES.” Oh well, just seems to be the way to go when you want good food in Chinatown.

After a great meal we explored a little bit of Little Italy and then went home, away from the chill.

We later met up David S. for dinner in the Upper West Side. The place we were originally going to go to, Rack and Soul, was closed for a private event, which was a relief to both Diesel and I, since we had pigged out earlier in the day.

  1. It’s good to hear that you have made yourselves at home and are already eating your way through the city. Can’t wait try some local places with you. My Tim will be there for Xmas and wants to see you.
